What's Special about our Mysteries?

What is so special about our Dinner Murder Mysteries?

One thing that sets us apart is the level of detail in the Mysteries. You will get detailed character webpages for your guests with dress suggestions, suggested interactions, secrets about other players, etc. After the break/dinner, there is another full webpage for each guest with more information.

As the host, there are several dedicated webpages covering everything you need to know to host a great Mystery.

Dinner Murder Mystery games can all be played from a cell phone or electronic device without a lot of paperwork. We have well over 400 webpages, although most are hidden because they are character data that is given directly to the host after purchase. We also have an electronic voting system for best actor/actress, best dressed and guessing the murderer. The results are automatically tallied for the host and this saves a lot of time.

We have editable digital PDF invites, Mp3 Audio Introductions and Mp3 Audio Solutions. What also sets us apart from other mysteries is the level of detail in our games. You will get characters with detailed descriptions and interactions with other characters, and a second set of information half way through the game. This is all available on webpages viewable on any device.

For a sample character page, see here =>Sample Character (pops up in new window).

Is any Experience Needed?

Absolutely not! Complete instructions are provided for the host, and lots of information for each guest as well. Guests come in costume and play their parts... they aren't reading dialog, but do have a number of suggested interactions that are in-character.

We give the host detailed instructions for the whole process (inviting guests through orchestrating "Mystery night"), including a suggested timeline.

See questions "What do I get..." below for more info.

What's the difference between the regular and the tame versions?

What's the Difference between the Regular and the Tame Versions?

A Dinner Murder Mystery game wouldn't be one without... ahem, a murder. So, both our tame and adult mysteries include at least one murder. Some games have a murder (or two) during the game whereas others have a murder prior to the beginning of the game. Any murders happening during a game are done with no visible "murderer" - for example, there might be a loud sound and a character yells, "I've been shot," and falls to the floor. This keeps the violence down, and the identity of the murderer is not knows, and must be discovered. Our tame versions are appropriate for teens, although there may be stealing, bribery and murder all done in good fun. They are regularly used by church youth groups and home-school groups.

Our adult games may have mild references to affairs and possible alcohol use (at a saloon, during prohibition or at a vineyard murder). We never use bad language and the 'bad' things that happen are general (i.e, not in detail) and done in the spirit of fun.

I want to invite a guest who is a little bit shy - will that work?

I Want to Invite a Guest who is a little bit shy - will that work?

We've found that being shy in normal life doesn't always translate into being shy during a Mystery, because the guests are acting. On the other hand, some parts cry out for someone who is quite outgoing.

This can be managed quite well in a mystery, because we send you the Character Assignment sheet, where you'll assign your guests to parts. The sheet indicates which parts need an outgoing person, and which don't.

Do players need to memorize anything? Do they read from a script?

Do the players need to memorize anything? Do they read from a script?

Not really - each player gets their own character description, which they would know after reading over a couple of times. Information is given about other characters, and interactions are provided, but they are generally short.

Example: "Go over to Blind Bill Blight and tell him you know where he got all his money. Suggest that if you are paid a certain amount, you might not mention it to the mayor." If a player wants to, they can refer to any of their character interactions or information on their phone.

How much lead time do I need to prepare for a mystery after purchase?

How much lead time do I need to prepare for a mystery after purchase?

Ideally, you'd have at least a couple of weeks, although it can be done more quickly. You will send invites to guests and give them time to RSVP. You also (optionally) will want to have a dinner along with the mystery. Your guests will need time to get their costumes together as well.

Securing the list of confirmed guests is the part that takes some time, so if you can do that quickly, there's nothing preventing you from hosting a mystery within the week.

How does an interactive murder mystery game, like those offered at Dinner Murder Mystery, differ from a scripted mystery?

How does an interactive murder mystery game, like those offered at Dinner Murder Mystery, differ from a scripted mystery?

A scripted murder mystery game comes with note cards and scripts which are usually read around a table. It’s all planned out ahead of time. While these games can be fun, our games are unscripted.

We do have tasks that players need to do. Plus there are a few games where characters may need to read a script for a short time, such as the reading of a Last Will and Testament or Wedding vows, etc. However, for the most part, the players will say things in their own words and can mingle and make up stuff as well. It’s all a part of the fun.

Questions about Game Play

Can guests play with their smart phones?

Can Guests play with their smart phones?

Absolutely. All the game information used to prepare and play the Mystery is on our "responsive" website, which formats correctly on PC/Mac, tablet and smart phone.

Each guest has a dedicated webpage of their own that gives them dress suggestions, their character profile, background, and suggested interactions with other players. They are also given confidential info on the other players that they can use in the game - all on their own webpage.

After the dinner/break, more information is made available on their webpage via a password that the host has.

The guests won't normally be looking at their phones that much however, the info is just there as a reminder - it's an interactive game!

What if a guest cancels at the last minute?

What if a Guest Cancels at the Last Minute?

If one of your guests cancels at the last minute, here is what you can do:

If they're a major character (i.e., not one of the extra characters), that means that they have somewhat more two-way interactions with other major characters, so you will need to move an extra character to that position if you have any extra characters.

Alternatively if you don't have extra characters in your game, move someone that, according to the character assignment document, doesn't have to be as outgoing to that position... since their original part is less critical.than the no-show character.

Another options is to play the character yourself - it may not take 100% of your time to perform the interactions with other characters.

Can I (the host) also play a character?

Yes, the host can also play a character, and not miss out on the fun! It’s important for the host to read all of the host information - it is all there for a specific reason. If you have read and become familiar with all the host information ahead of time your game should run smoothly.

Keep in mind that there are times when the host is busy, and remember that there is a dinner/snack/break to prepare. But you should certainly be able to join in the fun.

How will the guests know what to do?

(How) Will the Guests Know What to Do?

We provide a number of interaction suggestions for each guest. Example: "Go over to Blind Bill Blight and tell him you know where he got all his money. Suggest that if you are paid a certain amount, you might not mention it to the mayor."

But it's not all just following a script - each player is given some confidential info about themselves and others, which they can use however they wish.

After dinner/break, more interaction suggestions are made available, as well as more secret information about other characters.

Keep in mind that the game and characters are based on chicanery and deceit, so there's lots of built-in material for them to use!

Also, your guest's characters are well-described in the info they get, so they can ad-lib and ham it up quite a bit if they want to.

Can Dinner Murder Mystery games be played more than once?

Can Dinner Murder Mystery games be played more than once?

Yes, our games can definitely be replayed. Every time it is played the combinations of people are always different. Whoever is playing the character can bring it to life in their own unique way. Since our games are interactive and there is a mix and mingle atmosphere, characters are unscripted and adapt to their situation. Even though the murderer will be the same, each time you play it is still a ton of fun and each game takes on a life of its own.
